Embden Geese for Breeding

The Embden is the tallest goose breed with a massive long body, long neck and with pure white plumage. They will normally reach over a metre in height and will produce between 10 and 20 eggs. When mature a gander can weigh up to 26 pounds (a goose up to 20 pounds).

Des Broad has been rearing pure bred Embden geese on the south coast of Cornwall for 24 years. In the spring of 1982 he visited a farm with the intention of purchasing a trio of Muscovy ducks, instead he came away with a goose and a gander that later produced 7 goslings. They were reared free-range and went to family and friends for the Christmas table. The following year he reared a few more and attracted the interest of a local butcher. This led to a search for a large breed of goose and the Embden was chosen for its reputation for good meat production.

Having decided to specialise in Embdens, year on year more geese were reared and a reputation for fine meat began to build. Des now has three trios of pure bred Embden geese and hatches around 60 goslings every year in incubators. They are reared free-range and are fed oats, wheat and barley to boost their diet in the run up to Christmas.

Most of the geese are reared for the Christmas table market but more recently he has been selling birds in their feathers for breeding stock and show purposes
